About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Il Poggiale is Castellare’s single-vineyard Chianti Classico Riserva cru. The vineyard lies in Castellina in Chianti (SI) at 350–400 m on limestone soil. Vines are trained to single-arched-cane Guyot. Density ranges from 2,700 vines per hectare in older plantings to 6,000 in newer ones, and yields are 40–45 quintals per hectare.
Grapes
90% Sangioveto, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Ciliegiolo. The wine is intended to express the potential of Sangioveto through the character of one vineyard.
Vinification
Harvest takes place around mid-October. Vinification is in temperature-controlled stainless steel, followed by malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matures for 12–18 months in barriques, 20% new, and then spends 12 months in bottle.
