About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Il Poggiale is Castellare’s single-vineyard Chianti Classico Riserva cru. The vineyard lies in Castellina in Chianti (SI) at 350–400 m on limestone soil. Vines are trained to single-arched-cane Guyot. Density ranges from 2,700 vines per hectare in older plantings to 6,000 in newer ones, and yields are 40–45 quintals per hectare.

Grapes

90% Sangioveto, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Ciliegiolo. The wine is intended to express the potential of Sangioveto through the character of one vineyard.

Vinification

Harvest takes place around mid-October. Vinification is in temperature-controlled stainless steel, followed by malolactic fermentation.

Ageing

The wine matures for 12–18 months in barriques, 20% new, and then spends 12 months in bottle.

Technical data

Available formats: 750 ml and 1.5 L.

Tasting profile

Vibrant, lively ruby red. Violet, cherry and a mineral nuance shape the nose. The palate opens readily, with freshness and savoury flavour through the mid-palate, followed by a pleasant, fragrant and fruit-led finish.

Serving and pairing

Recommended with grilled meats such as Chianina steak, as well as game and aged cheeses.

Label / history

The first vintage was 1993. Il Poggiale is presented as a single-vineyard Riserva noted for elegance and typicity.
