About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The 2022 Sangiovese came from Banfi's Castellina vineyard. Its shallow soil combines sand and clay. Vines are planted at 5,100 plants per hectare and trained to spur-pruned cordon and the alberello Banfi system. Yield is 65 q/ha, equivalent to 6.5 tonnes per hectare.

Grapes

Latest published vintage (2022): Sangiovese.

Vinification

Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 25–30°C.

Ageing

The 2022 vintage matured for 14 months in French-oak casks of 60 or 90 hL.

Technical data

The 2022 vintage has 14.5% alcohol and is available in a 0.75 L bottle.

Tasting profile

Ruby red with light garnet reflections. The 2022 vintage has a sweet, fruit-led bouquet of blackcurrant and blackberry supported by liquorice. Soft, polished tannins integrate with pronounced acidity, giving the wine a lively, powerful structure. The finish is highly persistent, and the wine has substantial ageing potential.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16–18°C. Particularly suitable for meat dishes and traditional Tuscan cuisine.

Vintage notes

The 2022 growing season began at the customary time after a winter with sub-zero minimum temperatures during the first three months. Budbreak was a few days early. Rainfall from January through April was below average at approximately 170 mm, and spring remained dry and warmer than normal, especially in May. Drought and intense heat continued through June, July and much of August. Rain in late August and early September prevented berry dehydration, while good day-night temperature variation supported aroma development and preserved acidity. Harvest in the Castellina vineyard began on 21 September.
