About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Mormoreto vineyard lies at 300 m above sea level on sandy soils with a south-western exposure.
Grapes
Cabernet varieties and Petit Verdot form the historical core of the wine. A small amount of Sangiovese has been included since 2013 to emphasize elegance.
Vinification
The grapes are picked by hand into 15 kg crates. The bunches undergo an initial selection in the vineyard and a second selection on arrival at the cellar. Malolactic fermentation follows immediately after racking.
Ageing
At the end of the harvest year, the wine begins an 18-month maturation in French oak barriques. Natural micro-oxygenation through the oak contributes to its development. Several additional months in bottle bring the wine into balance.
Tasting profile
Mormoreto 2023 is an intense ruby red with violet highlights. Ripe blackberry, raspberry and blackcurrant lead the bouquet, followed by fresh, nearly citrus-like nuances. Liquorice and cardamom introduce the spicy and tertiary register, with cocoa powder and coffee appearing later. The palate is broad, with concentrated fruit and spice. Its dense, consistent tannic weave is notably silky, and the finish is extremely long and persistent.
Vintage notes
The 2023 growing season began with a very mild winter interrupted by several incisive cold weeks. Abundant early rainfall replenished soil-water reserves, while cool, rainy conditions continued from May to mid-June. Prolonged heat arrived in July, but the accumulated reserves sustained the vines. Cooler weather from late July relieved the first signs of water stress and supported continued ripening. The resulting vintage combines a sunny character with balance, depth and harmony.
Label / history
Cabernet and Petit Verdot were first planted here by the Frescobaldi family approximately 150 years ago. The project became Cru Mormoreto with the inaugural 1983 vintage.
