About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Montesodi comes from its namesake vineyard at Castello Nipozzano, 400 m above sea level. The parcel has a south-western exposure and schist soils. Its name refers to the stony character of the land.
Grapes
Sangiovese.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand into 15 kg crates. On arrival at the cellar, they are examined on a sorting table and selected individually for berry health and polyphenolic quality. Alcoholic fermentation and maceration follow. Malolactic fermentation takes place immediately after racking.
Ageing
At the end of the harvest year, Montesodi begins 18 months of maturation in 30 hL Austrian and French oak barrels. Several additional months in bottle allow the wine to reach its full balance and expressive potential.
Tasting profile
Montesodi 2023 is a vibrant ruby red. Its complex bouquet combines arbutus berries, redcurrants and goji berries with floral Sangiovese notes, followed by balsamic and haematic nuances. Maturation contributes roasted tertiary aromas. The palate is dry, with a dense yet silky tannic texture and a long, persistent finish.
Vintage notes
The 2023 season opened with a very mild winter punctuated by several genuinely cold weeks. Heavy early rainfall created substantial soil-water reserves, and cool, wet weather persisted from May to mid-June. July brought prolonged high temperatures, but the vines drew on the accumulated moisture. Temperatures fell from late July, easing initial water stress and enabling ripening to continue under more favourable conditions. The vintage is sunny yet balanced, deep and harmonious.
Label / history
The first Castello Nipozzano cru was created from this parcel in 1974. Montesodi remains closely associated with the estate’s expression of Sangiovese.
