About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Vernaccia is grown in the Bassa Valle del Tirso and Sinis, only a few metres above sea level. The Mediterranean climate brings mild winters, limited rainfall, and very hot, windy summers. “Gregori” is the local name for the lean, sandy Tirso-valley soil considered especially suitable for Vernaccia. Mature vines are trained as alberello and on trellises using Guyot and spur-pruned cordon systems. Yields are 30–40 quintals per hectare (3–4 t/ha), with harvest in mid-October.
Grapes
100% Vernaccia.
Vinification
Traditional white-wine vinification employs gentle pressing and temperature-controlled fermentation.
Ageing
Antico Gregori is made only from Vernaccia harvests judged exceptional. The 1991 wine received approximately 33 years of oxidative ageing. It was then completed with small amounts of extremely old Vernaccia wines based on material dating to the early decades of the twentieth century, principally the 1975 vintage.
Technical data
Format: 0.375 L.
Tasting profile
Bright amber with old-gold reflections. The broad, complex aroma combines hazelnut, honey, walnut husk and pastry cream, followed by salted peanut and fig. The palate is enveloping and warm yet retains striking freshness and savouriness, with exceptionally long persistence and close correspondence between aroma and flavour.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–18 °C in a large glass. Pair with bottarga preparations or bottarino cheese and spicy fig preserve. Its depth also suits slow, contemplative drinking.
Vintage notes
The release is centred on the 1991 vintage and incorporates small quantities of much older Vernaccia, especially 1975.
