About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Grillo comes from the Dispensa vineyard in Menfi, at 70 m above sea level. The moderately deep, moderately calcareous soil has average fertility and scarce to almost non-existent structure. Vines are trained on espaliers using spurred-cordon and Guyot pruning.
The vineyard follows organic farming principles and the SOStain® protocol. Ground cover includes berseem and subterranean clovers, beans, vetch, mustard and wild plants. Plant health is supported with minimal quantities of sulphur and copper, while beneficial insects and mating disruption are used against pests. The wine is certified organic and SOStain®.
Grapes
100% Grillo. The first vintage was 2016.
Vinification
The grapes are picked by hand, de-leafed and softly pressed. The must undergoes static settling for 24–36 hours before fermentation at approximately 15°C. After fermentation, the wine remains on its lees to preserve its aromas.
Ageing
Maturation takes place in stainless steel. The 2025 vintage was bottled in January 2025.
Technical data
The 2025 wine has 12.5% alcohol, total acidity of 6.25 g/L and a pH of 3.28. It is packaged in a 750 mL bottle weighing 400 g and sealed with a Stelvin closure.
Tasting profile
Light, clear yellow with subtle green reflections. The nose combines varietal and primary aromas of cedar, kumquat and other citrus fruit with white peach, tropical fruit, sage leaves and freshly cut grass. The palate is fresh and smooth, with youthful liveliness.
Serving and pairing
Suitable as a fresh aperitif and with fried vegetables or fish, Sicilian street food, seafood, pasta with sea urchins, mozzarella and other fresh cheeses. It is intended for youthful drinking but can develop over the following two years.
Vintage notes
The 2025 Menfi harvest was good overall and excellent in the higher vineyards. Ulmo, Monte Cirami and Maroccoli performed particularly well: cool soils, woodland and Mediterranean scrub supported complete, harmonious ripening and a balance between quality and quantity.
Label / history
La Segreta takes its name from the woodland surrounding the Ulmo vineyards. The wine is made exclusively from vineyards long owned by the Planeta family and cultivated through sustainable, organic agriculture.
The original label incorporated a detail from an eighteenth-century map of the area, referring to the family’s historical roots there. Its redesigned label draws on Sicilian nature and Giuseppe Riggio’s illustrated herbarium, produced with a painter between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Herbs, flowers and roots evoke the island’s concealed natural beauty and the wine’s aromatic character.
