About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The Nero d’Avola comes from the Dispensa vineyards at Menfi (AG), at 45–75 m above sea level. The moderately deep, moderately calcareous soils tend toward chalk and have almost no structure. The vines are trained on espalier systems using spurred-cordon and Guyot pruning.

Cultivation follows organic-farming criteria and the SOStain® protocol. Berseem and subterranean clovers, beans, vetch, mustard and wild plants provide ground cover. Vine health is supported with minimal quantities of sulphur and copper, while beneficial insects and mating disruption are used against pests. The wine is certified Vino Biologico and SOStain®.

Grapes

100% Nero d’Avola. The grapes are grown exclusively in vineyards long owned by the Planeta family.

Vinification

The grapes are de-leafed and pressed, followed by 12 days of skin contact at 25°C with repeated daily mixing. The wine is then racked, completes malolactic fermentation and rests until the end of February.

Ageing

Maturation takes place in stainless steel. The 2024 vintage was bottled in December 2025 under a STELVIN® closure.

Label / history

La Segreta takes its name from the woodland surrounding the Ulmo vineyards. Its original label incorporated a detail from an eighteenth-century map, recalling the family’s long presence in the area. The redesigned label draws on Giuseppe Riggio’s illustrated herbarium, created with a painter between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Its herbs, flowers and roots evoke Sicily’s concealed natural richness and the wine’s aromatic character.
