About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Serradenari is a formally delimited Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva in the Barolo DOCG. At the edge of La Morra, the estate's Serradenari vineyard forms a single block around the property against an Alpine backdrop. Its high position, strong day-to-night temperature swings and below-average temperatures slow Nebbiolo's development and lead to late ripening. The technical data give an elevation range of 350–480 metres, while the vineyard narrative describes vines approaching 500 metres. The site faces south to south-west and has calcareous-clay soils with sandy inclusions. Guyot-trained vines average 40 years of age.
Grapes
100% Nebbiolo.
Vinification
Harvest is manual in mid-October. The grapes are destemmed and crushed, then macerated in temperature-controlled tanks at 25–26°C for 50–60 days with daily pump-overs. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation follows.
Ageing
At least 18 months in large oak casks.
Tasting profile
Garnet red. Violet, rose and cherry aromas develop toward balsamic and hay notes. The palate is pleasantly dry and complete, balancing acidity with Nebbiolo's refined tannins.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–18°C with red meat, game, richly flavoured braised dishes and mature cheeses.
Label / history
Serradenari has been the home of the winery since its foundation in 1974. Establishing Nebbiolo at this elevation was considered risky in the early 2000s; the first Barolo Serradenari vintage was released in 2003.
