About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The wine comes from microplots of Nebbiolo in the heart of the Ornato appellation in Serralunga d’Alba, the first village in the Barolo area where the Pio family acquired vineyards. Ornato forms a broad amphitheatre with complete southern exposure, receiving sunlight from early morning until late afternoon. The vineyard lies at nearly 400 metres and combines limestone-and-clay soils with a very dry, warm microclimate.

Nebbiolo.
Vinification
Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks, followed by a long maceration on the skins.
Ageing
The wine ages for nearly 24 months, primarily in large barrels made from French and Eastern European oak. A small portion is matured in French oak barriques. Extended bottle ageing before release is intended to increase drinkability.
Tasting profile
The vineyard’s exposure, soil, elevation and dry, warm microclimate produce a powerful, full-bodied Barolo. Its profile combines intense red-fruit aromas with strong tannins, particularly in youth.
Label / history
Barolo “Ornato” was the Pio family’s first single-vineyard wine. It debuted with the 1985 vintage and has been made in small quantities every year since then. It has extremely long ageing potential.
