About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The Pinot Nero comes from vineyards in Mango, Trezzo Tinella, Loazzolo and Bubbio, at elevations of 450–550 metres above sea level. The sites have east, southeast, west and northwest exposures and clay-limestone soils. The Guyot-trained vines are 20–25 years old and are managed according to sustainable viticulture practices. Harvesting is entirely by hand.

Grapes

100% Pinot Nero. The wine is a 2018 millesimato with a 15% multi-vintage component drawn from the 2015–2020 vintages.

Vinification

The bunches are selected by hand on a vibrating sorting table, then gently pressed in an inert nitrogen environment. The Perpetuelle Sbagliato cuvée combines 85% wine from the 2018 harvest with 15% wine from vintages spanning 2015–2020. The approach takes inspiration from a perpetuelle reserve system but is adapted to comply with Alta Langa regulations—hence the name “Sbagliato.”

Secondary fermentation takes place in bottle according to the traditional method. After disgorgement, the dosage is prepared to an exclusive recipe without spirits.

Ageing

The 2018 component was kept for 30 months on noble lees in steel vats until disgorgement in 2021. The multi-vintage portion was also aged in steel. Traditional-method bottle ageing on the lees lasts at least 30 months. No oak is used.

Technical data

Alta Langa DOCG Extra Brut, Metodo Classico Millesimato 2018. Alcohol is 12.5%, and residual sugar is 0.8 g/L. Paolo Giacosa is the winemaker.

Tasting profile

Light straw yellow with emerging golden reflections and a fine, persistent perlage. The broad, layered nose develops progressively, bringing together aromas derived from yeast autolysis with toasted hazelnut, yellow flowers and white-fleshed fruit. The palate is inviting, juicy and concentrated while remaining elegant and caressing. Pronounced acidity is balanced by a fleshy, persistent structure, followed by a long, saline finish.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 4–6 °C. Suitable as an aperitif and with shellfish. Cellaring potential is 10–12 years.

Vintage notes

The 2018 season began with a long winter that continued through March. Abundant rainfall replenished the soils’ water reserves. Flowering and fruit set proceeded regularly in favourable conditions, while green harvesting was required for nearly all varieties to restrain production. Vine development remained gradual through summer, and a prolonged spell of stable fine weather enabled full ripening without an early harvest. Careful vineyard management was particularly important during this vintage.

Label / history

The wine’s name refers to its modified perpetuelle method. Older reserve wines form a multi-vintage fraction intended to add complexity and substance to the younger base wine, while the method is adjusted to meet Alta Langa requirements; this intentional adaptation gives rise to “Sbagliato.”
