About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The fruit comes from the Campo alle Comete estate vineyards in the commune of Castagneto Carducci, at 60 m above sea level. The mainly loose, sandy soils contain small amounts of clay and limestone. Mild temperatures, steady winds and marked differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures support even vine growth and ripening. The vines are 10–25 years old.

The estate covers 17 ha, of which 14.5 ha are vineyards and 2.5 ha are olive groves. Its vines were planted between 1993 and 2007. Sustainable agriculture is practised, with organic farming methods introduced in the vineyards in 2016.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness, with each variety vinified separately. Fermentation lasts seven days in stainless-steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28 °C. This is followed by 25 days of skin maceration with regular pump-overs to extract colour and tannins. Oenologist Stefano Di Blasi makes the wine.

Ageing

The 2015 vintage matured for 16 months in a combination of new and previously used French oak barriques and tonneaux, followed by 10–12 months in bottle.

Tasting profile

Elegant.

Label / history

Feudi di San Gregorio acquired the estate in February 2016, after which it became the winery’s Tuscan base. Campo alle Comete is an ancient place name that had fallen out of use; cometa means “guiding star” or “comet” in Italian. San Marino illustrator Nicoletta Ceccoli created the logo and the fairy-tale images used on the labels. The estate is led by director Jeannette Servidio and oenologist Stefano Di Blasi.
