About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Greco vines grow in volcanic sandstone soils, which give the wine its fresh, mineral character in aroma and taste. Feudi di San Gregorio's vineyards began in Sorbo Serpico, where the winery still stands, and were later joined by sites in Tufo, Santa Paolina and Taurasi, on hills between 350 and 700 m above sea level. Irpinia has an ancient winemaking tradition, and its vineyards sit alongside fruit trees, forests, olive groves and fragrant herbs.
Grapes
Greco is the oldest white grape variety in Campania. Its name means "Greek"; the ancient Greeks are said in the text to have brought it to Italy from Pelasgia, and there is evidence of wine made from it in Pompeii in the 1st century BC. It was previously known as Aminea and is often blended with Falanghina.
Vinification
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at 16–18 °C.
Ageing
The wine spends 4–5 months on the lees with regular bâtonnage.
Tasting profile
Fresh and mineral in aroma and taste, with appealing fruit and subtle nuances in aroma and flavour. Beautifully balanced.
Label / history
Feudi di San Gregorio was founded in 1986. The estate's vineyard area has grown from 30 to 300 hectares, and it also owns vineyards in Puglia and Basilicata. A second winery building was completed in 2004, the result of a research project combining tradition with modern winemaking approaches.
