About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Campo Re lies in the comune of Randazzo, at the far western end of Etna’s northern valley and near the entrance to the town. The north-facing vineyard is partly ungrafted and its vines average more than 70 years of age. Its deep soil can make full fruit ripeness particularly difficult in humid vintages. The technical details give an elevation of 730 m a.s.l., while the introductory vineyard description gives 735 m a.s.l.
Grapes
100% Nerello Mascalese.
Vinification
The grapes are destemmed and lightly crushed. A pied-de-cuve starts fermentation, which relies exclusively on indigenous yeasts and includes approximately 50 days of skin contact. No fining is performed. Before bottling, the wine is filtered through 5-micron polypropylene cartridges. Sulphur use depends on grape quality and wine stability: it may or may not be added, with values ranging from 15 to 50 mg/L.
Ageing
The wine matures for 18 months in neutral epoxy tanks of 1,500–2,500 L, then rests for another 18 months in bottle.
Technical data
It may carry either the Etna Rosso DOP or IGP Terre Siciliane Nerello Mascalese denomination. Annual production is approximately 2,000 bottles. Dark Burgundy bottles are used, with 750 mL, 1,500 mL and 3,000 mL formats available. The first vintage was 2015.
Tasting profile
Campo Re produces a profound, firmly tannic and comparatively backward expression. Its character is described as more Nebbiolo-like than the estate’s other crus.
Serving and pairing
Zalto Burgundy stemware is recommended.
