About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The wine comes from Tenuta Castiglioni, the historic starting point of the Frescobaldi family’s wine production. Wine was being made on the estate by 1300, and its wines later reached both the Papal Court and the English court of Henry VIII during the sixteenth century.
Grapes
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. The proportions are not specified for the latest published vintage, 2023.
Vinification
The grapes were destemmed immediately after harvest and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Gentle, continuous pumping over accompanied fermentation. Malolactic fermentation began after alcoholic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matured for 12 months in barriques, followed by two months in bottle.
Technical data
The 2023 vintage has 13.5% alcohol.
Tasting profile
The 2023 is brilliant ruby red with purple reflections. Blueberry, currant and plum shape the fruit profile, joined by star anise and black pepper. Roasted coffee bean appears among the tertiary notes. The palate is full-bodied, with dense tannins, ripe fruit and a lively line of acidity through the finish.
Vintage notes
Budbreak began in early April 2023. Cool, rainy spring weather encouraged vigorous shoot and bunch development. Warmer summer temperatures supported even véraison and the concentration of nutrients in the grapes. Dry harvest weather resulted in healthy fruit at full ripeness.
Label / history
Tenuta Castiglioni has been associated with the Frescobaldi family since the Middle Ages and is presented as the origin of its winemaking tradition.
