About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Benefizio is produced from a Chardonnay vineyard at Castello Pomino, 700 m above sea level. The site faces south and has predominantly sandy soil. Its steep, cool setting is surrounded by old fir and sequoia woods. Chardonnay has been cultivated at Pomino since 1855.

Grapes

Chardonnay.

Vinification

The 2024 grapes were hand-picked into crates with particular care. At the winery they underwent very gentle pressing, producing clear must that was clarified further by cold settling. Alcoholic fermentation took place in barriques, divided equally between new barrels and first-fill barrels. Malolactic fermentation was only partial.

Ageing

The wine matured in wood on its lees, with bâtonnage performed when necessary. A further period in bottle completed its refinement.

Tasting profile

Benefizio 2024 is straw yellow with golden highlights. The bouquet opens with a fresh mineral character, orange blossom and citrus, followed by white flowers and delicate notes of exotic and ripe fruit. Integrated spice and tertiary aromas reflect its maturation in wood. The palate is fresh, savoury, intense and deep, with a long finish and honeyed nuances in the aftertaste.

Vintage notes

The 2024 season followed a mild winter with average rainfall and no snow. Budbreak was uniform across the estate, and the shoots showed generous fertility. Flowering in early June and véraison in late July occurred in dry, sunny weather. Although summer 2024 was among the hottest recorded in Tuscany, the water reserves held by Pomino’s cool soils sustained growth until harvest and supported berry development.

Label / history

The Benefizio cru was created in 1973 at 700 m above sea level.
