About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from 14 different vineyards in the Barbaresco and Treiso areas.
Vinification
Fermentation and maceration take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 25–29 °C for 3 weeks.
Ageing
The wine ages for 12 months in barriques, then 12 months in large wooden casks.
Tasting profile
Complex, elegant, with refined tannins. Nebbiolo has firm tannins when young and becomes more balanced with age.
Vintage notes
The 2015 is considered by wine critics one of the finest expressions of this wine. It has a complex, deep flavour and an exceptionally generous aroma.
Label / history
Barbaresco is Gaja's only DOCG-classified wine. For it the Gaja family reworked the traditional Burgundy-shaped bottle used in Piedmont into a hybrid that combines the Burgundy shape with the long neck typical of Bordeaux bottles.
The name Nebbiolo is thought by one theory to come from "nebbia" (fog), since thick white fog often settles over the vineyards on early October mornings, when the harvest is in full swing. Another theory links it to "nobile" (noble).
