Carlo Gancia returned from a study trip to Reims in 1850 with the aim of creating Italy’s first sparkling wine using the Champagne production model, marking the beginning of the Gancia Wine House. In 1865, the house produced its first Italian classic sparkling wines through fermentation in the bottle.
King Vittorio Emanuele II appointed Gancia exclusive supplier to the Italian royal court in 1870 and granted it the right to use the royal coat of arms. Pope Pius XI later made the house a papal supplier by decree, with permission to use the papal coat of arms. In 1951, King Gustaf VI Adolf appointed Gancia an official supplier to the Swedish royal court.
