About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The estate's vineyards lie on the hills near the town of Salemi. The soils are sandy clay, and fresh sea breezes help the grapes ripen slowly and evenly.
Vinification
The skins stay in moderate contact with the fermenting must for about 36 hours in a concrete tank. The wine is then pressed gently in a hand-operated screw press to preserve its original aromas and flavours. Fermentation uses natural yeasts. The method follows an old tradition passed down through generations.
Ageing
The wine is aged for 2 years and 10 months in large old oak casks of 70 hl, which allow it to develop complexity.
Tasting profile
The wine keeps the typical fruit character of Nero d'Avola. Its taste is rounded and balanced, in a style that is distinctly Sicilian.
Vintage notes
2020: a moderate summer and cool nights preserved the grapes' bright acidity and aromatic intensity.
Label / history
"Russu" means "red" in the Sicilian dialect. The name refers both to the wine's deep colour and to the passion Giovanni Sallemi brings to winemaking.
