About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from the Brenntal vineyard in Alto Adige, at 220–300 metres above sea level. Gewürztraminer is demanding and thrives in warm, well-ventilated sites with deep loamy soils.
Vinification
Vinification begins with 3.5 hours of cold maceration, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.
Ageing
The wine spends 12 months on fine lees in stainless steel tanks and a further 6 months in large oak barrels. After bottling it matures for at least 6 more months in the winery's cellars. It is released two years after the harvest as a Riserva. This extended ageing in cellar and bottle gives the wine its fullness and complexity.
Tasting profile
Semi-dry, with fullness and complexity.
Vintage notes
2019: Weather in Alto Adige was challenging. A relatively mild winter was followed by an early spring with cool, wet weather in April and May. After flowering, conditions turned hot and dry. Ripening slowed because of low rainfall and below-average temperatures in late summer. Harvest began in early September and continued until the end of October.
Label / history
The ageing potential of up to 20 years underlies Brenntal's association with longevity. The 2019 vintage received 4 stars from Vinibuoni d'Italia and 4 points from Vitae.
