Vineyard and terroir
Yields are naturally low, and the bunches are small and loose.
Grapes
The vineyard is planted with an old-style Barbera clone that differs from modern clones. Its leaves have very deep cuts and resemble those of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand and destemmed. After three days of cold maceration, the must ferments for 15 days in stainless-steel tanks without temperature control, followed by three weeks of post-fermentation maceration.
Ageing
The 2012 vintage matured for 10 months in a new French oak barrel.
Label / history
The first vintage was 2012. Its grapes came from a vineyard whose previous owner was named Ada.
The butterfly on the label is based on a stylized drawing by Vladimir Nabokov. Besides writing Lolita and the novel Ada, Nabokov was a keen lepidopterist. He mentioned butterflies in all his books, including 16 times in Ada.
