About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Primitivo vines grow in chalky soils beneath a clay top layer. They are 10–15 years old on average.
Grapes
Bizona was made from Negroamaro until 2015 and switched to Primitivo in 2016.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness, fully destemmed and gently pressed. They undergo a five-day maceration, followed by natural fermentation in steel vats. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
Ageing
The wine rests briefly, partly in stainless-steel tanks and partly in cement vessels.
Tasting profile
The wine has a distinctive, relatively pale blue-violet colour. It is lively, playful and very fresh, with a straightforward, gentle, light, balanced and smooth character.
Serving and pairing
It can accompany summer dishes.
Label / history
The name pays tribute to Italian actor Lino Banfi and his film L’allenatore nel pallone, in which his character invents the “Bizona 5-5-5” playing formation. Nico Mangione had originally intended to make the wine from Negroamaro planted in five rows, with a yield of five quintals and five days of skin contact. Although this formula could not be maintained, the name remained.
The label contains several related clues. The recurring number 5 also appears in Nico’s date of birth, while “Blue Wine” evokes a relaxed mood between blues and reggae. Annual production does not exceed 5,000 bottles.
