About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from an old vineyard in the Borgo a Mozzano area, found by the Barsanti brothers. It is planted with Merlot, Sangiovese, Malvasia Nera, Montepulciano and Canaiolo together. Mixed planting was common in the past: it helped secure a harvest and showed which variety suited the area best. Here Sangiovese gave the best results.
Vinification
The grapes are vinified as whole bunches. Fermentation is spontaneous, with natural yeasts, in small open wooden vessels of 5–10 hectolitres.
Ageing
The wine is aged in stainless steel tanks and then in barriques, to reach the right balance. It is neither fined nor filtered before bottling.
Label / history
Campo di Macea is a new release from the Barsanti brothers.
