About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Vigna Poggiarso is the estate's driest and coldest vineyard, with steep slopes and pronounced day-to-night temperature variation, especially in summer. Its demanding conditions limit yields while preserving the quality and aromatic character of the fruit. The wine page places the rocky hillside at 560 metres, while the vineyard page gives an altitude of approximately 530 metres. The clay soil contains abundant rocky material composed of alberese and galestro. The vineyard was planted in 2002 at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare and is trained to Guyot; yield is 40 quintals of grapes per hectare.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

Bunches are selected in the vineyard and harvested by hand, then destemmed and crushed. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperature. Once alcoholic fermentation is complete, the wine remains in contact with the skins for approximately 15–20 days. It is then racked into concrete tanks to settle, where malolactic fermentation begins.

Ageing

The wine matures for 27 months in 50 hl French-oak casks.

Tasting profile

Bright purple, developing garnet reflections with age. The bouquet offers small red berries, forest fruit, cassis and violet. The palate has substantial body, lively freshness, ripe fruit and direct yet non-aggressive tannins. The finish is long and savoury, presenting an elegant but forthright expression of Sangiovese.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C. Its freshness complements rich meat dishes, soft cheeses and mature cheeses of moderate intensity.
