About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Carignano is grown in Sulcis, in southwestern Sardinia. Cantina Mesa's 100 ha of vineyards are located around Porto Pino. The Mediterranean climate brings little, unevenly distributed rainfall, high spring and summer temperatures, and winters ranging from cold and dry to mild. The soils combine limestone debris and red clay with relatively compacted windblown sands. They are well structured and fertile, with abundant calcium and trace elements and a high quartz-sand content.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested in the second half of September, destemmed and gently crushed. The must is transferred to the fermenters by gravity, then macerated and fermented for 9–12 days at approximately 26 °C.
Ageing
The wine rests on its fine lees in stainless-steel tanks for at least six months, followed by a further two months in bottle in the winery's cellars.
Label / history
In Sardinian and Spanish, “Mesa” literally means “dining table”; for the winery, it represents food, feasting, maternal love, simplicity and aromas. Cantina Mesa was founded by designer Gavino Sanna and Giuseppe Mele. Motifs created by Sanna and inspired by traditional Sardinian carpet weaving decorate both the winery's white façade and every Cantina Mesa bottle. Winemaker Piero Sella is a member of the winery's team.
