About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Burdese comes from selected parcels in the Dispensa and Maroccoli vineyards, located around Menfi and Sambuca di Sicilia. Dispensa lies at 75 metres above sea level and has moderately calcareous, medium-deep soil tending toward chalk, with little structural development. Maroccoli reaches 430 metres and has structured calcareous soil containing some chalk and abundant lime particles.

The vines are trained on an espalier with spur-pruned cordons. Cultivation follows the SOStain® protocol. Clover, vetch, yellow mustard and spontaneous plants provide ground cover, increasing organic matter and nitrogen while supporting soil microfauna. Vine health is managed with minimal quantities of sulphur and copper. Beneficial insects, mating disruption and natural treatments including zeolite, kaolin and plant extracts are used to deter pests.

Grapes

70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc. The name comes from the local words Burdisi or Burdese, meaning “from Bordeaux” and referring to this traditional Bordeaux pairing.

Tasting profile

A powerful, densely structured red whose substantial tannins are balanced by pronounced alcoholic weight. The concentrated, ripe-fruit profile brings together myrtle and preserved cherry with leather. Cherry, cocoa, iodine and rosemary emerge progressively on the nose. The wine combines density, structure and balance and is intended for extended ageing.

Label / history

First produced in 1999, Burdese is made in limited quantities from selected estate vineyards. Its identity interprets a Bordeaux-style blend through vineyards in Sicily.
