About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Sito dell’Ulmo is produced exclusively from the Ulmo vineyard in Sambuca di Sicilia (AG), on the banks of Lake Arancio. The Merlot vines were planted in 1987 at 195 m above sea level. The moderately calcareous soils are medium-textured and range from medium to considerable depth, with abundant pebbles and sections of dark vegetable soil.
The vineyard is trained to espalier with Guyot pruning. It is cultivated according to organic-agriculture criteria and SOStain® protocols. Ground cover includes berseem and subterranean clovers, beans, vetch, mustard and spontaneous plants. Vine health is managed with minimal amounts of sulphur and copper, while beneficial insects and mating disruption are used against pests.
Grapes
100% Merlot from a single vineyard.
Tasting profile
A compact ruby-red wine with concentrated aromas and flavours of sweet blackcurrant and candied violet, alternating with thyme and lavender. The structure is lively and versatile, driven by expressive tannins and an intense savoury character. It is multifaceted and persistent, combining tactile tannic pleasure with exceptional length.
Label / history
Experience with the Merlot vines planted at Ulmo in 1987 led to the identification of this lakeside parcel as the source for a single-vineyard expression of the variety. The first vintage was 1995.
