About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit is divided equally between estate vineyards at Nittardi, at 450 metres, and a vineyard near Villa Rosa, south of Castellina in Chianti, at 270 metres. The latter was planted in 1968 with Sangiovese and small quantities of seven other indigenous varieties. Both sites have limestone and clay soils with abundant Galestro schist, contributing a mineral character.
Grapes
The current blend is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo, Colorino, Malvasia Nera, Ciliegiolo, Mammolo, Foglia Tonda and Pugnitello.
Vinification
Natural fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks.
Ageing
For 2022, maturation comprised 15 months in 35 hl French and Austrian oak botti, four months in concrete vats and a few further months in bottle. Bottling took place in June 2024.
Technical data
The 2022 wine has 14% alcohol, total acidity of 5.8 g/L and pH 3.4. Yield was 30 hl/ha, with 3,300–6,660 vines per hectare.
Tasting profile
Ruby red, with juicy cherry and raspberry accompanied by Mediterranean and floral nuances. The palate is medium-bodied, with grippy tannins, freshness and a long finish.
Serving and pairing
Serve at approximately 16°C. Pair with creative Tuscan starters and main courses; Tuscan appetizers, charcuterie and pasta are also suggested.
Vintage notes
The hot 2022 season was moderated by late rainfall, which helped avoid unbalanced ripeness and serious crop loss. Intensive vineyard work and careful fermentation produced healthy, fully ripe grapes, harvested September 10–15.
Label / history
Belcanto denotes the harmony of a complete musical work and recalls Luigi Veronelli’s image of wine as the earth’s hymn to the heavens. Eight pebble shapes in Galestro grey and Chianti Classico red represent both the musical scale and the wine’s eight varieties. Michelangelo, a historic owner of Nittardi, appears within the mosaic.
