About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Casanuova di Nittardi is made exclusively from Sangiovese grown in Vigna Doghessa, a single vineyard in Castellina in Chianti, Siena. The southeast-facing site lies at 450 m above sea level and is planted at a density of 6,600 vines per hectare. Its medium-depth, stony soils are characterized as limestone and schist and are also described in terms of Galestro, Alberese and quartz. These soils contribute freshness, elegance and mineral definition. The 2023 yield was 2,300 litres per hectare. The vineyard is certified organic and managed sustainably; Nittardi’s wines also carry Equalitas sustainability certification.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

Natural fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks.

Ageing

The 2023 matured for 14 months in French and Austrian oak barrels, of which 10% were new, followed by four months in concrete vats and further bottle ageing. Bottling took place in June 2025.

Technical data

Chianti Classico DOCG. The 2023 has 14% alcohol, total acidity of 5.88 g/L and a pH of 3.3.

Tasting profile

The wine has a vibrant ruby colour and aromas of cherries, violets and aromatic herbs. Rounded tannins frame a powerful mid-palate, leading to a long, silky finish. The broader profile also includes spice notes and combines structure with freshness.

Serving and pairing

Serve at approximately 16°C. Recommended pairings include Bistecca Fiorentina, Peposo dell’Impruneta, pasta and meat dishes. The minimum stated ageing potential is ten years.

Vintage notes

The 2023 season brought a rainy spring, followed by warm summer months and ideal harvest conditions during September and October. Careful vineyard management limited damage from downy mildew. Overall quantities were slightly below normal, while the resulting wines showed a classic profile with moderate alcohol, pleasant acidity and persistent flavour. Healthy, fully ripe Sangiovese for Casanuova di Nittardi was harvested between 15 and 19 September.

Label / history

The estate was recorded as “Nectar Dei” in 1183 and later belonged to Michelangelo Buonarroti, who sent its wine to the Pope. Since 1981, every vintage of Casanuova di Nittardi has carried a label and wrapping paper commissioned from an international artist in tribute to Michelangelo. The 2023 release bears the 43rd artist label, created by Korean artist Chun Kwang Young. Both label and wrapping paper use his characteristic hand-assembled mulberry-paper forms: reds and oranges evoke Tuscan soil and harvest vitality, while blue and silver tones introduce a dialogue with the cosmos. Together, the works express a harmony between earth and sky, nature and culture, and craftsmanship and imagination.
