Vineyard and terroir
The 2020 Brunello is assembled from selected grapes grown in Pinino’s two distinct pedoclimatic areas after the fruit intended for the Riserva has been selected. The Pinino vineyards lie in northern Montalcino at 284.2 m a.s.l., face southeast and have stony soils containing galestro and alberese. Canchi is situated northeast of Montalcino at 318.2 m a.s.l.; its southeast-facing vineyards are predominantly clayey, with silt. The vines are trained to spurred cordon.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese Grosso.
Vinification
Harvest ran from 21 September to 2 October 2020. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, followed by 18–25 days of skin maceration.
Ageing
The wine matured for at least 30 months in oak casks and barriques. Only wine from the best casks and barriques was selected for the final 2020 blend.
Technical data
Alcohol: 14%. Total acidity: 5 g/L. Dry extract: 30.2 g/L. Production: 30,000 bottles. Bottle format: 750 ml.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red. Blackberry and plum aromas mingle with spicy nuances. The palate is velvety, full-bodied and smooth.
Vintage notes
January and February were relatively dry, followed by a cold March with rain and snow. Spring began with below-average temperatures before becoming fairly warm, with rainfall close to the seasonal norm. June was comparatively wet, yet the grapes developed regularly and the berries grew evenly. July was predominantly dry. Heavy showers returned in August while temperatures remained average. Pronounced day-to-night temperature variation in September encouraged the development of valuable compounds inside and outside the berries. Substantial rainfall delayed the harvest, producing grapes with balanced technological and phenolic maturity and a significant aromatic component. The 2020 vintage marked a new phase for Pinino after its acquisition by Il Borro, with stricter grape and barrel selection.
Label / history
The redesigned label places a large pine cone at its centre. The motif represents fertility, growth and prosperity, as well as resilience and a connection with nature.
