About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

CHIANTI CLASSICO is the estate’s signature wine and the most direct expression of each growing season. About half of Poggio al Sole’s grapes—including most of its Sangiovese—are dedicated to it. The fruit comes from the estate’s location between Panzano and Badia a Passignano.

The vineyards have been farmed organically since 2013 and certified organic since 2016, following a three-year conversion. Synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are not used, and organic requirements continue through the cellar.

Grapes

Blend proportions vary by vintage. Latest published vintage (2024): 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo. Sangiovese supplies the wine’s precise, energetic structure, characteristic acidity and firm backbone. Canaiolo softens its sharper edges and gives the blend a rounder, more approachable character.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand from late September to early October, with deliberate selection of Sangiovese and Canaiolo. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks, followed by 12–16 days of maceration. The approach is intended to retain fresh primary fruit and clear aromas. After maturation and harmonization, the wine is bottled in April.

Ageing

The wine matures for 12 months in used oak barrels, gaining depth and subtle complexity without allowing the wood to dominate its varietal character. The concise production description also identifies tank maturation as part of the ageing process.

Bright ruby red in colour, with a compact yet elegant structure and delicate, layered fruit. The aroma has the classic character of Sangiovese. On the palate, vibrant, well-integrated tannins support the fruit and lead into an elegant, persistent finish.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16–18°C. Pair with traditional pasta dressed with meat or mushroom sauces, white meat, poultry, gently braised dishes, hard cheeses—particularly medium-aged Pecorino—and chestnuts.

Vintage notes

The 2024 vintage is the current release. Because this wine receives about half of the estate’s grapes, it is conceived as a transparent reflection of the year and the work carried out during that growing season.
