About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Brunello di Montalcino is assembled from multiple vineyard plots, each contributing a distinct combination of altitude, exposure and soil. For 2020, the source vineyards ranged from 480 to 570 m above sea level. Their moderately deep, low-fertility soils contained 20–30% gravel and rocks. Vines were trained to spurred cordon and Guyot and farmed organically and sustainably, using green manure, cover crops, natural manure and plant fortifiers as required.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
The 2020 grapes were hand-picked between 21 September and 8 October at an average yield of 40 q/ha. Fermentation lasted 10 days in temperature-controlled truncated-cone stainless-steel and concrete vats at a maximum of 25°C. A further 12 days of maceration followed, with gentle extraction adjusted to the characteristics of each Soil Unit.
Ageing
The 2020 spent 30 months in 25 and 40 hl Slavonian oak barrels, followed by 7 months in natural concrete vats. It was bottled unfiltered in June 2024.
Technical data
Production of the 2020 vintage was 24,400 bottles, 800 magnums and 80 double magnums.
Tasting profile
This is the central expression of Poggio Antico’s production: solid, deep and integrated, with consistency and restraint taking precedence over flamboyance. The blend is intended to synthesize the estate’s varied plots while preserving the identity of the vintage.
Vintage notes
The 2020 growing season followed a regular climatic pattern, with timely rainfall supporting even vine development. A cool summer enabled steady technological and phenolic maturation. Large day–night temperature differences in September produced ripe, concentrated fruit. It was among the coolest years of the decade, resulting in low yields and high quality.
