About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Riserva is made only in years when selected parcels show exceptional concentration, firm acidity and structured tannins. Selection is based on the ability of individual plots to provide structure and long-term ageing capacity rather than on maintaining a fixed vineyard origin. Although a vintage may effectively come from one vineyard, the defining principle is selection. For 2018, the fruit came from a south-facing plateau at 500 m above sea level with gravelly, stone-rich soils and spurred-cordon-trained vines.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese. The 2018 vineyard was certified organic and managed with natural manure, plant fortifiers and cover cropping as required.
Vinification
The 2018 crop was harvested on 4 October at an average yield of approximately 40 q/ha. A three-day cold soak took place in tulip-shaped concrete tanks, followed by two weeks of fermentation and an additional 15 days of maceration.
Ageing
The 2018 matured for 30 months in 25 hl French oak barrels and was bottled in July 2021.
Technical data
Production of the 2018 vintage was 5,800 bottles.
Tasting profile
Riserva is the deeper and more austere Brunello in the range. Its concentrated profile, firm acidity and structured tannins require time to open and support evolution over decades.
Vintage notes
Several snowfalls made the winter preceding the 2018 harvest one of the coldest in recent decades. Cool, windy conditions and below-average summer temperatures prolonged ripening through September. Strong day–night temperature variation produced fragrant Sangiovese with balanced phenolic concentration and substantial ageing potential.
