About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes are grown in Puglia on clean, predominantly clay-sandy soils. The Cantina di Veglie lies on the sun-drenched plain of Veglie, in the heart of Puglia, where the clay-loam soils are warmed by the Salento sun.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested in August and September at the ideal stage of ripeness, then chilled and gently pressed. The juice settles naturally before fermentation at a low temperature.
Ageing
The wine is aged in stainless steel tanks.
Tasting profile
Young, bright and dry, clean, fresh and light. The character is refined, floral and spicy.
Serving and pairing
Suggested with appetizers, baked or grilled fish, pasta and risotto with shellfish, and fresh cheeses.
Label / history
Cantina di Veglie dates back to 1950. It is a family business run by the winemakers Felice and Armando Mergè, owners of Poggio Le Volpi. The Retroterra range takes its name from a word meaning "backyards" and pays tribute to this understated yet generous region. The range includes native grapes as well as "unexpected" varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, which show freshness and minerality in the Southern Italian sun. Its philosophy, a "journey back to the land", is an attempt to give traditional winemaking heritage a modern perspective.
