About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The Pinot Nero is grown in Apulia on medium-textured red soil. The Cantina di Veglie lies on the sun-drenched plain of Veglie, where clay-loam soils are warmed by the Salento sun. Grapes are harvested in August–September at optimal ripeness.

Vinification

Fermentation takes place on the skins at a controlled temperature.

Ageing

The wine is aged in stainless steel tanks and for around 2 months in oak barrels, to develop softness and balance.

Tasting profile

Elegant, easygoing and friendly in style. Well balanced, fruity and gently spicy.

Serving and pairing

Pairs with snacks, grilled meats and vegetables, pasta, mushroom risotto, roast chicken and lamb.

Label / history

Cantina di Veglie dates back to 1950. It is a family business run by winemakers Felice and Armando Mergè, the owners of Poggio Le Volpi. The name of the "Retroterra" range literally means "backlands", a tribute to an understated yet generous region where native and "unexpected" varieties, such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, develop freshness and minerality under the Southern Italian sun. The range's philosophy, a "return to the land", is an attempt to reinterpret the heritage of traditional winemaking in a modern way.
