About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Primitivo grows in Puglia on medium-textured red soil. The producing estate, Cantina di Veglie, lies on the plain of Veglie in the heart of Puglia, where the clay-loam soils are warmed by the Salento sun.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested in August and September at full phenolic ripeness. Fermentation takes place on the skins at a controlled temperature.
Ageing
The wine rests in stainless steel tanks, then for around 6 months in oak barrels, to develop softness and balance.
Tasting profile
Soft, fresh and easy-drinking. The aroma and flavour cover a broad range of fruit, berry, floral, woody and spicy notes. Tannins are soft with gentle grip, and a touch of natural sweetness gives an elegant finish. Well balanced.

Suited to picnics or a quiet family evening at home.
Label / history
Cantina di Veglie dates back to 1950 and is family-run, managed by winemakers Felice and Armando Mergè, the owners of Poggio Le Volpi. "Retroterra" means "backcountry" and pays tribute to this understated yet generous region. The range includes native grapes and "unexpected" varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, which show freshness and minerality. Its philosophy, a "return to the land", is to reinterpret the heritage of traditional winemaking in a modern way.
