About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Vermentino is grown in Apulia on light, slightly clayey soils with good texture. The Cantina di Veglie lies on the sun-drenched Veglie plain in the heart of Apulia, where clay-loam soils are warmed by the Salento sun.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested in August–September at optimal ripeness, then chilled and gently pressed. The juice settles naturally before fermentation at a low temperature.
Ageing
The wine is aged in stainless-steel tanks.
Tasting profile
Clean, fresh and light in style, with citrus and floral notes. An easygoing dry white.
Serving and pairing
Suited to seafood appetizers, baked or grilled fish, pasta or risotto with shellfish, and fresh cheeses.
Label / history
The Cantina di Veglie dates back to 1950 and is a family business run by winemakers Felice and Armando Mergè, owners of Poggio Le Volpi. The "Retroterra" range takes its name from a word meaning "backcountry", a tribute to this understated yet generous region. The range includes native grapes as well as "unexpected" varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Its philosophy, a "return to the land", is an attempt to reimagine traditional winemaking heritage in a modern way.
