About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The wine continues a family tradition established at Villa Pattono, the ancestral country residence in Costigliole d’Asti. Barbera grew in the vineyards surrounding the villa and was used by the family to make its house wine from the beginning of the twentieth century. The modern wine expresses its Monferrato origin and is intended to develop through fairly long bottle ageing.

Grapes

100% Barbera. The first vintage was produced in 1982.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand in September, then destemmed and pressed. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vessels, with approximately two weeks of skin contact. Malolactic fermentation is also completed in stainless steel.

Tasting profile

Very intense, bright red in colour. The aroma combines ripe plum with peppery spice and liquorice. The palate is full-flavoured and structured, with an elegant, pleasing character and good persistence.

Serving and pairing

Suited to substantial first courses and red meats.

Label / history

Villa Pattono takes its name from the family’s old country residence. The historic “soldier” label was created by Renato Ratti as a tribute to the heroism of Piedmontese regiments during the eighteenth century.

The wine is presented in the Albeisa bottle, named after Alba. Renato Ratti created this distinctive bottle in 1973 to identify the territory and its wines.
