About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard lies at Brolio at 450 m above sea level, with southern and southwestern exposures. Planting density is 6,600 vines per hectare, and the vines are trained to spurred cordon. The soil belongs to the Monte Morello geological formation and is characterized by limestone.
Grapes
100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Beginning with the 2021 vintage, Historia Familiae became a pure Cabernet Sauvignon rather than a blend.
Vinification
The grapes were harvested by hand during the first days of October 2021. Fermentation took place in stainless-steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 24–27 °C, with 14–16 days of maceration on the skins.
Ageing
The wine matured for 20 months in 225 L barriques, comprising 80% new French oak and 20% used barrels. It was bottled on 26 March 2024.
Technical data
Toscana IGT. Alcohol: 14.50% vol. Total acidity: 5.60 g/L. pH: 3.33. Net dry extract: 29.06 g/L. Total polyphenols, expressed as gallic acid: 2,225 mg/L.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red. The complex bouquet combines cherry jam and vanilla with nuances of oak. The palate is exuberant, soft and full-bodied. Velvety tannins give the wine harmony and elegance, leading into a long finish whose aftertaste reprises the aromas perceived on the nose. Its defining character is vibrant and distinctly elegant.
Vintage notes
The 2021 season was unusually challenging. Frost struck in April, persistent drought marked the summer months, and the grapes ripened early. Despite these conditions, the harvested fruit was healthy and of excellent quality.
Label / history
Historia Familiae means “history of the family” in Latin. This limited special edition pays tribute to the Ricasoli ancestors who preserved Brolio and its historical legacy over the centuries. The bottle is decorated with a gold silkscreen design bearing the names of 61 family ancestors. The wine is produced only in exceptional vintages.
