About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Bianco di Riecine comes from old estate vineyards in Gaiole in Chianti, including vines encountered by John Dunkley and Palmina Abbagnano when they arrived there. The 2023 technical sheet records vines aged 20–30 years at 450–500 m on limestone-and-clay soils. The organically managed vineyard is trained by Guyot and spurred cordon, planted at 5,000 vines/ha and cropped at 35 q/ha.

Grapes

100% Trebbiano. The first vintage was 2020.

Vinification

The 2023 fruit was hand-picked in September, with selection in the vineyard and on a vibrating sorting table. After destemming, the grapes fermented in cocciopesto amphorae. Skin contact continued until December. Part of the liquid was then moved to a new French-oak tonneau, while the remainder stayed in amphora with 50% of the skins. The components were assembled in amphora in April.

Ageing

The technical sheet gives 10 months in cocciopesto amphora and four months in bottle. The broader cellar account explains that most of the wine remained on its skins for six months, while 10–15% aged without skins for the same period in a new 500 L tonneau; the components were then blended and bottled.

Technical data

The 2023 has 12.50% alcohol. It was bottled in January 2025, with 300 standard bottles produced.

Label / history

The project was inspired by Luigi Veronelli’s writing about the white wine made at Riecine in the 1970s by John Dunkley and Palmina Abbagnano. Lana, Alessandro and Carlo conceived Bianco di Riecine as a reinterpretation of that earlier wine.
