About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The wine is drawn from a selection of the best grapes destined for Chianti Classico, grown around Gaiole in Chianti at 450–500 m above sea level. The vineyards have been managed organically under ICEA certification since 2006. Their soils combine limestone and clay; the vines are trained by Guyot and spurred cordon at a density of 5,500–6,000 plants per hectare. The 2023 technical sheet gives a vine age of 25–35 years and a yield of 50 q/ha.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese. Grapes are harvested in October and selected by hand, first in the vineyard and again on a vibrating sorting table.
Vinification
Parcels are vinified separately in open, unlined Nomblot concrete tanks. The must is maintained at a controlled temperature during the initial 4–5 days, partly through the use of dry ice, before spontaneous fermentation begins. The 2023 technical sheet describes fermentation with whole grapes. Maceration lasts approximately 15–20 days; the longer account explains that the wine remains on the skins beneath a submerged cap for another 10 days after fermentation and is then pressed.
Ageing
Ageing takes place in a single large, untoasted Grenier oak cask. The structured production data and 2023 technical sheet give 24 months in cask, while the introductory account gives 22 months. The wine subsequently returns to unlined concrete for tartaric stabilization and natural fining, followed by at least three months of bottle ageing before release.
Technical data
The 2023 vintage has 15.50% alcohol. It was bottled in December 2025, with production comprising 6,500 standard 0.75 L bottles and 100 magnums of 1.50 L. Lightweight glass is used; capsules and labels are recyclable or regenerable, shipping cartons are PEFC-certified, and the inks are biodegradable.
Tasting profile
The 2022 vintage combines concentrated but mid-weight fruit with aromatic lift and freshness. Its profile spans cherry, blackberry, red cherry, pomegranate and wild strawberry, accompanied by violet, jasmine, camomile, brushwood, mace, liquorice, leafy, floral, saline and earthy nuances. The palate is linear and energetic, with zesty acidity and firm, chalky yet polished tannins. Dark chocolate, salt and spice appear beneath the fruit, leading to a tight, tense and chewy finish. Other published assessments emphasize its floral, balsamic character, depth, freshness and mineral-saline persistence.
Vintage notes
The 2022 Riserva was presented as a panorama of the vintage’s best fruit, with greater breadth than the Chianti Classico annata while retaining perfume, juiciness and elegance. It was considered drinkable on release, though expected to show better from 2026.
Label / history
First produced in 1975, the Riserva was conceived to demonstrate Sangiovese’s importance without sacrificing elegance. Its established style places refined varietal aromas ahead of oak influence and has remained consistent over time.
