About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Colto comes from young, vigorous vineyards planted deep among pristine woodland in the cooler northwestern sector of Montalcino. This relatively austere climate shapes its expression of the territory. Production is extremely limited.

Grapes

Sangiovese.

Ageing

Wood and concrete are fundamental to the élevage, helping the wine acquire greater structure. Continued bottle ageing develops additional complexity, character and elegance.

Tasting profile

Bright, vibrant and expressive, Colto combines depth and structure with the character and elegance of Sangiovese grown in northwestern Montalcino.

Vintage notes

The inaugural release was produced from the 2020 vintage.

Label / history

Colto was introduced after years of attentive vineyard work. Its label reproduces Sandro Chia’s large 1984 oil painting Southern Comfort, part of his monumental work of the 1980s. The painting pays tribute to working people and draws on American popular culture, Italian Spaghetti Westerns and the place of horses in Italian culture. Buffalo Bill’s Wild West performances in Tuscany provide another link between Italian culture and the American cowboy. The image evokes the warmth and force of sunset accompanying vineyard workers home at the end of the day, reducing labour to a gesture, a posture and a gaze toward the infinite.
