About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from two vineyards: a 0.6 ha site in Manzano and a 2.42 ha site in San Giovanni al Natisone. The sites face south and southwest, with marl soils layered with clay and vines averaging between 25 and 75 years old. Only organic methods are used in the vineyards. Friuli-Venezia Giulia has a mild, humid climate influenced by its proximity to both the mountains and the sea.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand during the first half of September, once they have reached peak ripeness. They are gently pressed in a pneumatic press, and the juice is then cold-settled to separate it from the sediment. Fermentation takes place in contact with the skins; all of the must completes fermentation in oak and second-use barrels. The individual lots are blended two weeks before bottling.
Label / history
In the local dialect, “Ronco” means “vineyard on a hill,” while “Gnemiz” is the name of the family that lived and made wine on the property for centuries. The Palazzolo family acquired the land in the early 1960s and retained its historic name. Enzo Palazzolo built a new winery in 1964, and management passed to his daughter Serena in 1981. She oversees production from vineyard work through bottling with the assistance of winemakers Roberto Cipresso and Andrea Pittana.
