About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow on the hills of Civitella d'Agliano, between northern Lazio and Umbria. The estate covers 130 hectares of volcanic soil, which has belonged to the Mottura family for more than 70 years, although vines have been grown here since the XIII century. Most vineyards were planted several decades ago; only one third are new. The family follows organic farming principles, using no artificial fertilizers and no machine harvesting.
Vinification
Only ripe, healthy grapes are selected. Sergio Mottura wines are made from hand-picked grapes, which are gently pressed. The must is chilled immediately to speed settling, so that only clear juice is fermented. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The estate combines traditional farming with modern winemaking technology and uses no chemical additives.
Ageing
The wine rests for 4 months in stainless steel tanks, then a further 3 months in bottle. The bottles are stored in mountain caves carved from tuff, which the Mottura family uses as cellars.
Label / history
A porcupine is the emblem of Mottura wines. The estate's owners say the animal lives only where nature is in balance, and they consider it their duty to preserve the beauty and purity of the natural world.
