About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Montepulciano fruit is grown on the hills of Civitella d’Agliano, between northern Lazio and Umbria. The estate comprises 130 hectares of volcanic soils. Some vineyards were planted several decades ago, while one-third are newer plantings. The vineyards are farmed organically and traditionally, without artificial fertilisers or mechanical harvesting.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand and gently pressed. The must is cooled immediately to accelerate settling, allowing only clear juice to undergo fermentation. Modern winemaking methods are used without chemical additives.
Ageing
The wine rests for four months in steel tanks, followed by three months in bottle in the estate’s mountain cellars, which are carved into tuff.
Tasting profile
The 2009 vintage has delicate berry aromas and a warm, fruity palate.
Label / history
The Mottura family has owned the estate for more than 70 years, although vines have been cultivated there since the 13th century. The porcupine is the emblem of Mottura wines, chosen because the animal is associated with a balanced natural environment.
