About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Syracide comes from the estate's new vineyard: 1 ha of 8,000 vines planted in 1999. The estate lies in Civitella d'Agliano, between northern Lazio and Umbria, on a 130-hectare property with volcanic soils. Vineyards have been cultivated here since the XIII century. The Mottura family has owned the property for more than 70 years. Most of the vines were planted several decades ago, and only one-third of the vineyards are new. The family follows organic farming principles, with no artificial fertilizers and no machine harvesting.
Vinification
Grapes are picked by hand and gently pressed. The must is cooled immediately so the sediment separates more quickly, and only clear juice is fermented. The estate combines traditional farming with modern winemaking technology that avoids chemical additives.
Tasting profile
The 2016 has a nose combining red fruit, mineral and spice notes. On the palate, rounded tannins come together with elegant acidity and juicy fruit flavours.
Vintage notes
The first Syrah harvest from the vineyard was picked in 2009, ten years after planting. Its quality exceeded the winemakers' expectations.
Label / history
Syracide is a new colour in the Sergio Mottura range and the first wine made from the harvest of the estate's new vineyard. The estate's emblem is the porcupine, an animal said to live only where nature is in balance.
