About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The estate lies in Civitella d’Agliano, between northern Lazio and Umbria. Its 130 hectares have volcanic soils. Vines have been cultivated there since the XIII century; the family now works with vineyards planted several decades ago, with new vines accounting for only one third of the plantings. Organic principles are followed, without artificial fertilisers or mechanical harvesting.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand and gently pressed. The must is chilled immediately to accelerate sediment separation, and only the clear juice is fermented. The estate combines traditional farming with modern winemaking technology and avoids chemical additives.
Ageing
The wine originated from trials in which young Grechetto was aged in fût-style oak barrels, bringing oak notes together with the grape’s natural flavours and aromas.
Tasting profile
Refined and distinctive, with natural fruit flavours and aromas complemented by notes of oak.
Label / history
Louis Fabrice Latour introduced Sergio Mottura to the practice of ageing young wine in fût-style oak barrels. The successful trials inspired Sergio Mottura to create Latour a Civitella in 1994. The wine later received Gambero Rosso’s highest rating, Tre Bicchieri. The porcupine is the emblem of Mottura wines because it lives only where nature is in balance. The Mottura family has owned the property for more than 70 years.
