About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Gallico comes from selected Petit Verdot vineyards at Tenuta Campo al Mare in the Bolgheri area. The soil tends to be sandy, and the vines are trained to low spurred cordon. The current planting density is 6,200 vines per hectare; the 2020 technical sheet records 6,250. For that vintage, average grape production was 7 tonnes per hectare and the grape-to-wine yield was approximately 55%.
Grapes
100% Petit Verdot.
Vinification
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel with approximately four weeks of maceration. For the 2020 vintage, maceration in steel lasted about 30 days at 28°C.
Ageing
The current protocol specifies at least 24 months in tonneaux before bottle refinement. The 2020 wine matured for approximately 20–24 months in 225-litre French-oak barriques, half new and half one year old, followed by at least three months in bottle.
Technical data
Alcohol is 14.5%. Cellaring potential is up to 20 years.
Tasting profile
The 2021 vintage has an intense purple colour with violet highlights. Aromas evoke enamel, strawberry, rhubarb and coffee. Its tannins are firm and silky without becoming astringent, giving this uncommon Bolgheri monovarietal a modern, original sensory profile.
Serving and pairing
Pair with stewed hare or aged cheeses.
Vintage notes
The 2020 season brought a relatively cold winter, including sub-zero nights without vine damage, followed by a warm spring with useful rainfall. Heavy June rain preceded drought through late August; renewed rain then lowered temperatures markedly before an unexpected heat wave in mid-September. Petit Verdot was harvested in the final ten days of September.
Label / history
Gallico debuted in 2019. Its name evokes the variety’s association with Aquitaine and ancient Gaul, while also suggesting a rural, ancestral and bucolic character. The wine was created to give Petit Verdot—usually a supporting variety—a leading role as a Bolgheri monovarietal.
