About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Baia al Vento is produced from approximately seven hectares of Merlot at Vallone dei Messi, on Tenuta Campo al Mare along the Bolgherese provincial road. The sandy-clay vineyard soils are rich in minerals and iron. Vines are trained to low spurred cordon at 6,200 plants per hectare.

Grapes

100% Merlot.

Vinification

Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, with maceration lasting approximately four weeks.

Ageing

Maturation lasts 24 months in barriques before refinement in bottle.

Technical data

The current presentation records 14% alcohol. The 2021 technical sheet gives 14.5% and a production of approximately 10,000 bottles. Cellaring potential is up to 30 years.

Tasting profile

The 2022 vintage is purple-red. Aromas include ripe cherry, redcurrant, blackberry, tobacco-led balsamic nuances, and chocolate. The palate is dry, full-bodied and persistent, with evident yet silky tannins tending toward sweetness. It is complex and substantial, while the vineyard’s Merlot character brings ripe red fruit, density and a supple palate that develops through extended ageing.

Vintage notes

The 2021 season began with a mild, rainy winter. March was dry, and budding occurred during the first weeks of April. Gradually rising temperatures and normal rainfall supported even shoot growth and favourable flowering at the end of May. June through August was slightly warmer than average and almost rainless; a warm, dry September allowed the grapes to be harvested in optimal condition.

Label / history

The first vintage was 2007.
