About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from a two-hectare plot in the Monte La Guardia area, at 800 metres above sea level on the northern slopes of Etna. The Nerello Mascalese vines are 90 years old.
Grapes
Nerello Cappuccio and Alicante Bouschet together account for less than 5% of the blend.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand around mid-October. Seventy per cent are manually destemmed, while the remainder are vinified as whole bunches. Fermentation with native yeasts and skin contact takes place in an old, open-top oak fermenter. The must is then transferred to stainless-steel tanks for spontaneous malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine ages on its lees in stainless-steel tanks for six months. After racking, it matures in oak barrels for a further six months. It is bottled without filtration.
Label / history
The name commemorates the harvest date of the first vintage: Thursday, 15 October 2009.
