Canelli
3 cantine e 1 vino. Canelli has long been the capital of Moscato: the town where the wines of the surrounding hills were turned into sweet sparkling wine, and whose historic underground cellars are part of the Vineyard Landscape of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2014. The DOCG covers seventeen communes around it, in the provinces of Asti and Cuneo — Calamandrana, Calosso, Canelli, Cassinasco and Coazzolo in full, and parts of Bubbio, Castagnole Lanze, Costigliole d'Asti, Loazzolo, Moasca, San Marzano Oliveto and their neighbours. Canelli in breve
The zone lies between the Tanaro and the Bormida, across the valley of the Belbo, on the border between the Langhe and the Monferrato, between 165 and 500 metres. Its soils are marine sediments without rock: sandy marls, marls, clays and limestones of the Piedmontese Tertiary, poor in organic matter. Above 400 metres, north-facing slopes steeper than 25 per cent are excluded.
The wine is made only from Moscato Bianco, picked by hand and cropped at no more than 9.5 tonnes a hectare. Canelli, or Canelli Moscato, is sweet, aromatic, gently frothy and low in alcohol; a Riserva is released only after at least 30 months. For years Canelli was a subzone of the Asti DOCG; it became a DOCG in its own right in 2023.
